Michigan led all of the Big Ten schools with six Academic All-America at-large selections, followed by Minnesota (5), with Michigan State and Penn State also having multiple award winners (two each). In Indiana, Nebraska, and Purdue, a student athlete also received Academic All-America Recognition on Friday.
The Big Ten men’s ice hockey, women’s gymnastics, and women’s swimming and diving programs each had three academic All-Americans at conference height, with men’s gymnastics, men’s swimming and diving, and wrestling each producing two academic All-Americans. In addition, Michigan and Minnesota had winners in sports that were not sponsored by the Big Ten (women’s water polo and women’s ice hockey, respectively).
The Big Ten had four Academic All-America At-Large first-team selections on the women’s side and three honorary first-team players on the men’s side, with both brands topping every Division I conference in the country. The men’s ice hockey selection was also noteworthy as the Big Ten was the only conference that season that produced Academic All-Americans in the sport.
A highlight of this group of 18 Big Ten Academic All-Americans are three student athletes who recently won medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Michigan Junior Swimmer Maggie MacNeil won three medals for Canada (gold – 100m butterfly; silver – 4x100m freestyle relay; bronze – 4x100m individual relay) during Indiana Junior Diver Andrew Capobianco won a silver medal for Team USA in the 3-yard synchronized springboard, and Michigan graduate student wrestler Myles Amin secured a bronze medal in 86 kg freestyle wrestling for the European microstate San Marino.
To be considered for Academic All-America status, students must not only achieve a GPA of at least 3.30, but must also be a starter or key reserve and participate in at least 50 percent of their school’s competitions.
