Paetow High School football coach and sports director William “BJ” Gotte has his student athletes working hard this summer to prepare for the fall football season. He said he was excited about the level of player engagement in his school’s youth football program and let them focus on skill development over the summer.

Gotte took the time out of his busy training schedule to answer questions about what he is doing to keep building the four-year school’s football team while also ensuring that each of his players has a chance to excel.

Q: The Paetow football program is still young but has made great strides since it was launched. What do you think has been the team’s greatest advance in the field since the campus opened in 2017?

A: The biggest factor that contributed to our early success here at Paetow High was the involvement of players and parents in our football program. The children and parents bought their way into our lessons and their trust in us as employees enabled us to maximize our potential as a team.

Q: What area of play do you plan to focus your training program on in the summer and what do you expect from your players in the summer?

A: In summer we will focus on a few areas. During our sport-specific skill session, we follow a multi-stage approach that begins with a three-week phase in which we focus on the position-specific basics. For the next four weeks, we will turn our attention to reinstalling our offensive and defensive schemes. During the seven weeks we take time during each skill session to work on the skills of various special teams.

The second half of our summer preparations takes place during our summer strength and conditioning camp (also known as SAC). This is a seven week program in which our athletes prepare their bodies for the physical, mental and emotional challenges a football season has in store for them.

Q: When new players try to represent the Panthers on the field, what do you look for in terms of leadership and athletic skills in freshmen or players moving from other schools?

A: The expectations we have for our program are simple – do your best. Do your best in the classroom, do your best in the field, and do your best in the community. Every player in our program, be it a senior who has been part of our team from the start or a newbie / transfer who has just been to our campus for the first time, will be brought up to the same standard. It is my job as head coach and the job of my staff as trainers and instructors to help every child reach their full potential in order to be the best version of themselves on and off the pitch. We believe that our programs are flexible enough in all three phases of the game to maximize the strengths of each group as a whole and each individual athlete as they work through our program.

Q: What does a typical week look like for a Paetow athlete entering the summer strength and conditioning program as they work towards the fall football season?

A: We have a four-day work week and start the day with sport-specific skills in grades 10 to 12 from 6.30 a.m. to 7.15 a.m. After our training session, our athletes switch to the 9th to 12th grades of summer strength and fitness from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. After the summer in strength and fitness, our ninth graders complete their sport-specific skills from 9:45 a.m. to 10:20 a.m.
