Review: Is the US Bank Altitude Go the best credit card for you?

There are several cards that’ll appeal to most spenders by offering extra points in bonus categories, like dining and grocery store purchases. While the best premium cards have annual fees, the U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card offers rewards in well-rounded bonus categories — especially eating out — with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.

The Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card earns 4x points on dining, takeout, and restaurant delivery, 2x points at grocery stores, grocery delivery, gas stations, and streaming services, and 1x point on all other purchases.

It also comes with a $15 annual streaming bonus for eligible services like

    Netflix

, Apple TV+, Spotify, and others.

You’ll earn a welcome bonus of 20,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days of account opening (worth $200 toward merchandise, gift cards, cash back, and more). That’s a decent bonus for a card with no annual fee, especially if you’ll take advantage of the bonus categories or want to use the card’s other perks, such as the $15 annual streaming credit and no foreign transaction fees.

Let’s take a closer look at this card.

Who should and shouldn’t consider the US Bank Altitude Go card

The Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card earns points that are easy to redeem for rewards and are worth 1 cent each no matter how you redeem them. While other cards have redemption options of varying value, you’ll always know what you’re getting with the Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card

Because of that, it’s essentially a cash-back card that offers a few extra reward options. Considering there’s no annual fee, the reward categories are strong and easy to use if you eat out often to earn 4x points (4% cash back), and earning 2x points (2% cash back) for grocery, gas station, and streaming purchases is also a nice bonus. This card is most rewarding for foodies who like to spend a lot to eat out or order in.

The $15 steaming credit also adds to the card’s value, particularly because you’ll earn 2x points for those purchases in addition to the annual credit. It’s not a lot, but you’ll basically get a month free (or mostly free) each year with the card.

The Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card isn’t the most rewarding card in any specific category, but offers well-rounded rewards among several bonus categories. That said, the best category is dining and earning 4x points with a no-annual-fee card represents excellent value if you’ll use the card for that spending. And while it’s possible to earn outsized rewards with transferable points cards, lots of folks don’t want the hassle or complexity.

The Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card is best if you’re looking for a single credit card that rewards your most common purchases and you don’t want to pay an annual fee. If you don’t spend a lot on dining, there are other cards that will better reward your usual spending habits.

How to earn rewards from the US Bank Altitude Go card

With the Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card, you’ll earn:

    • 4 points per dollar spent on dining, takeout, and restaurant delivery
    • 2 points per dollar at grocery stores and gas stations, and on grocery delivery and eligible streaming services
    • 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases

The points you earn never expire as long as your card is open, and there are no limits to how many points you can earn.

It’s important to note that only certain streaming services are eligible to earn 2x points and the $15 annual streaming bonus. The current list of eligible merchants includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, AT&T TV NOW, Discovery+, Disney+, ESPN+, Fubo TV, Google Music,

    HBO Max

    ,

    Hulu

, Netflix, Paramount+, Peacock, SiriusXM, Slacker Radio, Sling TV, Spotify, Tidal, Vudu, and YouTube Music.

    How to use points

The points you’ll earn with the Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card are worth 1 cent each regardless of how you redeem them, so choose the reward you like best.

You can redeem your points toward travel, merchandise, gift cards, cash back, or statement credits through the card’s online rewards portal. There’s a minimum redemption amount of 2,500 points ($25) if you’re redeeming for cash back or gift cards and 1,000 points ($10) for travel or merchandise.

You can also set up Real-Time Rewards and use your points instantly to cover a purchase you’re making with your card via your mobile device. This is a convenient feature that allows you to use your points within seconds of making an eligible purchase.

With Real-Time Rewards, you can redeem your points as you earn them instead of feeling like you need to save them for a big reward in the future. While you can certainly still do that, it’s also easy to earn points and redeem them for regular rewards on everyday purchases as you go along.

    Benefits and features

The main benefit of the Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card is the bonus categories offered, but there are a few other benefits worth mentioning.
