Three crews from the Enniskillen Royal Boat Club traveled to the Henley Women’s Regatta last weekend, with one crew reaching the semifinals of the competition and the other two crews reaching the quarterfinals, which was a remarkable feat.

The competition didn’t take place last year due to Covid so everyone was happy that the organizers were able to hold a safe event this year.

The Junior Eight made it to the semifinals, their crew consisted of Nikki Kernaghan, Laura Turner, Niamh Cassidy, Chloe Thompson, Zoe Elliott, Katie Donnelly, Martha McBrien and helmsman Grace Ralph.

The draw after the time trial on Saturday morning brought them into a heat against the Tideway Scullers School on Saturday afternoon, which they won with 2 ½ lengths in a time of four minutes and 43 seconds.

The ERBC Eight led the race from start to finish on the 1,400 meter shortened route.

In the quarter-finals on Sunday morning, the crew competed against the Latymer Upper School and after a very exciting, close race, ERBC was the first to cross the finish line and won the race by three-quarters in an improved time of four minutes 28.5 seconds.

There wasn’t much time before the girls had to face Headington School 8, one of the top crews in the UK who, thanks to a cheap draw, had the advantage of one less race.

The girls ran well until the end, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win. Headington School went on to raise the Peabody Cup.

Nikki Kernaghan, Girls’ Captain, said: “We had great races, none of our races went bad.

“Our starts were exceptional, which definitely helped us over the weekend. The race at the Henley Women’s Regatta was an incredible experience in itself. Moving into the semi-finals and beating the team that later won the cup made it easier. We knew we had the best possible race against Headington. The track was a nice race track because it was a short sprint. We all loved every minute of it. ”

Tough tie

The championship pair of Zoe McCutcheon and Maeve Donnelly performed well in the Friday morning time trial and then faced the Oxford University BC crew in the quarterfinals after a tough draw.

The girls rowed hard to the finish line but were unfortunately beaten. The girls have just returned to training together in the past few weeks after rowing for their universities in the United States for the past year.

ERBC’s Coxed Four, Aine McCaffrey, Abigail Linton, Jenny Little, Niamh Campbell and Cox Georgia Maxwell made it through their time trial on Saturday to qualify for the heats of the regatta and then faced the William Perkins School crew.

After an extremely close race, the girls from the Enniskillen Royal Boat Club were declared the winners in a time of five minutes 25.5 seconds.

The quarter-final draw gave the team an encounter with the Glasgow Academy, which unfortunately ruined their dream of winning the Groton School Challenge Cup.

All in all, it was a weekend of excellence from the Boat Club against the UK’s top crews.

Derek Holland, Head of Rowing at ERBC, was delighted with the performance: “The weekend went well and the girls eight now have time to do even better before what for us is the biggest event of the year, the Henley Royal Regatta in August takes place. They will travel with the boys’ quad to take part in competitions. ”
