MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota rowing program will take off for the first time this season, competing in the Head of the Mississippi Regatta on Saturday, October 2nd.

Hosted by the Minneapolis Rowing Club and in its 41st year in 2021, the Head of the Mississippi Regatta begins at 8:45 a.m. CT with the women’s first college action scheduled for 9:30 a.m. CT.

Together with the Gophers, Creighton, Macalester, St. Ben’s / St. John’s and St. Thomas are scheduled to compete at the event.

This weekend will be a great opportunity to learn more about our team. We’re a young team and this is a year of learning for our program, ”said Gophers Head Coach Alicea Strodel called. “Saturday will be an opportunity for different people to be in different positions and face the challenge.”

Gophers name Trio of Captains
The rowing program and head coach of the University of Minnesota Alicea Strodel have announced team captains for the 2021-22 season Lindsay Eliasen, Gabby Mulally and Casey Wempner runs Maroon & Gold. Eliasen and Mullally return as captains for the second year in a row, while Wempner joins the lead group this year.

The newest addition to the University of Minnesota’s rowing program will be serving as an assistant coach this week Molly Brüggemann competes with Great Britain at the 2021 World Coastal Rowing Championships in Oeiras, Portugal.

Gopher rowing rewind
Minnesota celebrated a successful return to the water in 2021 after waiting more than a year to compete due to COVID-19 public health concerns. The Gophers finished the season in sixth place in the Big Ten championships as Lauren Burrows-Cheng (First team) and Lindsay Eliasen (Second Team) Received All Big Ten Awards – Burrows-Cheng also received an Honorable Mention from Division I Pocock All-America 2021 as selected by the CRCA. The Maroon & Gold climbed the Pocock / CRCA Division I rankings to # 14 for the program’s highest national ranking since 2008. The Gophers also celebrated a new program record with 42 Academic All-Big Ten honors and set a new team record with a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 (for the fifth semester in a row the team has improved its performance in class).
