PAC-12 SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

SAN FRANCISCO – UTAHs UK Covey has been named Pac-12 Football Scholarship Holder of 2021, the conference announced today. The award, presented in each of the 24 Pac-12 sponsored sports, was created to honor student athletes who achieve excellence both academically and in their respective sporting disciplines.

Covey is the first Ute to receive the Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year award since joining the conference. The fifth-year receiver from Provo, Utah, completed his business administration studies in the summer of 2021 with a grade point average of 3.86. In November, Covey was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 First Team to qualify for the Academic All-America Awards. It was his third Academic All-District selection, and he was named Academic All-America after the 2020 season.

On the field, Covey leads the team at receptions (44) and has returned two punts for touchdowns so far this season. He is a four-time All-Pac-12 selection, three as returnees, including first team in 2018 and 2020. The school record holder in Punt Return Yards, Covey is also in the top 10 for both career all-purpose yards and Career Reception Yards in Utah History.

To qualify for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student athletes must be a senior (with a track and field qualification), on the way to graduation, have an accumulated grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least one Participate in 50 percent of the scheduled competitions in the sport and have lived at the institution for at least one year. Each Pac-12 institution can nominate one person per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff at the end of each sport’s regular season. The athletic performance of the nominees will be taken into account when voting on the award.

A scholarship athlete of the year is chosen in each of the 24 sports sponsored by the Pac-12: baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, beach volleyball, men’s cross-country skiing, women’s cross-country skiing, soccer, men’s golf, women’s golf , Women’s Gym, Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Rowing, Women’s Rowing, Men’s Football, Women’s Football, Softball, Men’s Swimming & Diving, Women’s Swimming & Diving, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Athletics, Women’s Athletics, Women’s Volleyball and Wrestling. The award was first established in the 2008/09 academic year.
