HBCU graduate and content creator Cornell Conaway uses his “HBCU Athlete” brand to amplify the conversation about HBCU athlete awareness

WASHINGTON, DC, Sept. 28, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — Cornell Conaway, creator of Gainz Sportsgear, continues to advance the story of HBCU sports appreciation through his HBCU Athlete brand. Cornell Conaway, a content creator, graduate of Bowie State University and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., founded his apparel brand to provide athletic apparel and training gear for all athletes, from beginner to competitive level.

With the launch of its HBCU Athlete subsidiary, Cornell set out to create a brand that not only embodies on-trend athletic apparel, but also provides the training equipment athletes need to reach their full potential, while also championing Historically Black Colleges and Universities ( HBCU ). HBCU Athlete is the only HBCU Collegiate Athletic-aligned brand that focuses on the “total athlete” with athletic resistance brands and USPA-approved wrist wraps. “As a Black owned fitness brand and an HBCU graduate, it was critical for me to design and produce items that speak directly to the HBCU community while also being the best tools to help athletes train,” says Cornell.

As the HBCU homecoming season fast approaches along with the attention to HBCU culture these days, the HBCU Athlete brand is starting to have more conversations about HBCU athletic programs. Cornell decided to meet with a number of stakeholders from different HBCUs to discuss its brand’s mission and vision and how the brand can work with the various colleges to offer athletes more than just training gear, but training gear that reflects their individuality reflects while supporting the mission and vision of their university. Cornell’s goal is to provide quality exercise equipment to HBCU athletic programs while making a commitment to their programs.

Many former and current collegiate athletes have recently been photographed with HBCU Athlete. Channing Crowder, a retired Miami Dolphins linebacker, University of Florida graduate and host of The Pivot Podcast, wears HBCU Athlete’s “Trendsetter Hoodie” on a recent episode of Funky Fridays with The Pivot Podcast. Head Football Coach Deion Sanders was recently photographed with Jackson State University wearing the brand’s ‘We Create Culture’ crew neck. “NFL legends like Ed Reed, Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Hall of Famer Deion Sanders who wear our brand mean a lot to us as they increase the visibility of our HBCU athletes and institutions,” said Cornell. Cornell, as creative director and founder, wanted to ensure that his designs were protected, so he decided to register the “HBCU ATHLETE” trademark.

As the HBCU Athlete brand continues to carve out its own niche in athleisure and athletic branding, the brand’s focus will shift to additional athletic training products in the years to come.
