Jaspers Hosts Manhattan Invitation & Seniors’ Day

Ridgefield, NJ — The Jaspers returned to the track this afternoon, sending a fleet of two eights and two fours to take on Stockton, Skidmore and MAAC opponent Iona.

Next came the Women’s Novice 4+ and Women’s Varsity 4+.

The Jaspers fought their way down twice in the Novice 4+ trading positions with Stockton, eventually edging them out by less than a second with a time of 8:52. Iona won the rookie race in 7:41. The Varsity 4+ race was an almost identical race to the Varsity 8+ race earlier in the day. The four of Elyse Holmes (helmsman) Katie Martine, Lauryn Hughes, Maura McCarthy and Janine Gayanello made an early move with Skidmore ahead of the other two boats, who narrowly missed out on first place in a time of 9:02.
The final race of the day was the Women’s Second Varsity 8+ Elyse Holmes(helmsman) Maeve McNally-Cullum, Brianna Scollan, Amamna Touse, Lauren Wright, Dana Shandon, Olvia Herera, Jackie Lubarsky and Claire Vrendenburg took an early lead which they held for most of the race. The last minute of the race saw a hard move from the field and left them just six seconds behind first place finisher Skidmore in a very hungry third place in 7:49.

After completing the races, we had the opportunity to celebrate Seniors’ Day with our seniors and their families.

helmsman Elyse Holmes is a communications major with a focus on sports media.

40th Anniversary Starboard Standout and MAAC Team Member Emily Hughes is a biology major and will continue her education in genetic counseling next year.
Brianna Scollana biology major, will continue her education in a physical therapy program at Columbia University next year.
Lauryn Hughes completed her bachelor’s degree in marketing and management and is currently pursuing her MBA from Manhattan College.

Jaspers return to Overpeck on April 3 when they will host Fairfield and Sacred Heart University.
