In 2019, Lyles lost a breathtaking time of 19.50 seconds in the 200-meter run. making him the second fastest American and the fourth fastest man to ever run the event. At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, he won gold medals in the 200 meters and the 4×100 meter relay.

Michael Johnson, the current American 200s record holder and former world record holder, has said that he believes Lyles is currently the only sprinter with a chance to break his 19.32 second record.
