ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – The Lehigh rowing team kicked off their fall season on Sunday with a strong performance in the Stockton Invitational against host Stockton University on the Intracoastal Waterway. The day included stake races where crews start about 10 seconds apart and snap to a buoy about 2,000 meters away before stopping, quickly spinning, and resting back to their original starting point.

“I think we drove today as we are used to, what we have to learn at the beginning of the season,” said the Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “This will allow us to do a lot of things later that will enable us to do well in our championships.”

There were a total of five events that day, with a Lehigh boat taking first place in all of them. The Mountain Hawks’ A-boat took first place in the women’s varsity four (17:53), the B-crew won the men’s varsity four (16:21), and the A-boat won the men’s eight (15:51) ), the A-crew won the women’s eight (16:36) and the A-boat won the men’s novice four (18:40).

“To be honest, I think all the crews did really, really well,” said Conley. “For the first graders and newbies, this was their very first college race. To have a race that was not traditional, with an 18 degree turn, handle it well and compete well and in some cases finish in the top three.” The event is great and bodes well for us on the road, I thought the upperclassmen did a fantastic job of setting the bar high, but we have to get higher and higher every week.

“Stockton will be a really good team this year,” continued Conley. “They have shown great strides so far this fall and I look forward to seeing them at the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships this spring, along with a few other races later this year.”

Conley left the fall opener optimistic about the next race – the Head of the Housatonic – this Saturday in Shelton, Connecticut.

“[Today] tells us that we believe the training we do works and it allows us to improve and get faster every day, “said Conley. re do technically and educationally. Our team believes in what we do what is important for us to move forward. “
