There was no way Mechelle Freeman’s neighborhood in Frisco would allow her to come home without celebrating what she had just accomplished.

They got into their cars and circled the block for a drive-by caravan celebration.

Freeman is the woman behind the scenes and behind several medals draped around her neck at the most dominant athletics starts in the United States during the 2020 Olympics.

“We ended it on a high note and a special note, so I’m happy to say I was a part of it,” said Freeman.

As a US women’s relay trainer and a former Olympian herself, Freeman knew the weight of the task ahead.

“You have to make tough conversations and hard decisions, but at the end of the day it’s about bringing in the top four women who you think can do the job,” she said.

One of these women was Allyson Felix – the most decorated US athlete in the history of the Olympic Games. Freeman thought about training the 4 x 400 meter relay, which brought Felix her final Olympic gold.

“We ran together. We passed the baton to each other, ”she said. “It was really a special time for me to be a coach now and to be there and to see their last Olympics and be there at this moment of their last run.”

Back in her neighborhood in Frisco, she swapped the role of coach for mother and wife on Sunday – and maybe a local celebrity.

“You’re so excited about the job and the role, just trying to make the best decisions and assembling the best team that when you take a step back I feel like I can breathe,” said Freeman.

She said she plans to spend the next few hours enjoying the love of those who have been her support system all along.

“Just be home, that’s all I want to do for the next two days,” Freeman said.
