Recognition for rowers under the RT Team of the Year Awards

The nominees for the RTÉ Sport Awards 2021 for Team of the Year were announced this afternoon, with nine “teams” competing for this year’s award at the ceremony on December 18th.

There had been some surprise that rower Paul O’Donovan – Olympic champion with Fintan McCarthy – was not one of the nominees for the individual award after an excellent year, as he is currently considered one of the best rowers in the world. But he and McCarthy are now nominated for the team award.

The women’s foursome Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty, who won bronze in Tokyo, were also listed.

Here is the full list of RTÉ Sport profiled nominees.

GALWAY CAMOGY

Galway won their second All-Ireland Senior Camogie title in three years in a highly competitive three-point win over Cork. It’s only the fourth All-Ireland title for the tribal women, but the third in nine seasons.

KATIE-GEORGE DUNLEVY & EVE McCRYSTAL

The tandem paracycling stars had their best games to date after winning two gold medals and one silver medal in Tokyo 2020. They won inspirational silver in the velodrome in the B 3,000 m individual pursuit. On the streets of Mount Fuji, they retained the time trial title they won five years ago in Rio before finishing their triple medal hunt in the B-road race at Fuji International Speedway.

LEINSTER-RUGBY

Leinster continued his dominance in the domestic league, claiming an unprecedented fourth Guinness Pro14 title in a row when they defeated Munster with a minimum of fuss in the final at the RDS.

LIMERICK HURLER

Limerick took his place in the pantheon of the hurling greats after defeating Cork to seal the first consecutive All-Ireland titles. Sharper, stronger and more relaxed, the green machine ruthlessly took apart its opponents and achieved the highest total of all time in a final. Limerick has now won three All-Ireland crowns in four years.

MEATH LADIES SOCCER PLAYER

The Royal County played in their first senior women’s football final and produced one of the biggest surprises of all time in Gaelic games to deny Dublin the fifth straight crown. It was an incredible journey for Eamonn Murray’s side, who were Intermediate Champions last year before taking the National League Division 2 title a few months earlier.

PAUL O’DONOVAN & FINTAN McCARTHY

Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy made Olympic history with a touching victory in the men’s lightweight double final. The Irish duo lived up to their favorite status and won on the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo. In April, the couple also won the European Championship.

SHAMROCK ROVERS

The Hoops have won consecutive Premier Division titles and finished 19th overall. Rovers took the trophy with three games left after topping the table since halfway through the season to continue their current dominance in domestic football.

TYRONE FOOTBALL PLAYER

Less than a month after nearly losing his place in the competition, Tyrone won an unlikely All Ireland title, prolonging Mayo’s extraordinary ordeal in the finals. The Red Hand’s resilience and game intelligence shone through when they won the fourth All-Ireland Crown.

LADIES FOUR OARS

Ireland won its first medal at the Tokyo Olympics after the quartet of Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty took the bronze medal in the women’s four-oars final with a sensational finish.
