Good afternoon, people from Marietta! It’s me again, Christopher Schmitt, your moderator for the Marietta Daily.

First, what the next three weather days will look like:

  • Saturday: Partly cloudy with showers in the evening. High of 80, low of 65.
  • Sunday: Isolated thunderstorms. High 89, low 70.
  • Monday: Partly cloudy, there may be showers throughout the day. High 89, low 70.

Marietta’s historical treat of the day:

The Second World War shook Marietta. Because of the labor shortage, women have had to move up and do jobs that were traditionally done by men. Broughton Dairy Farm had to close some businesses because they couldn’t find enough people to run them. In 1944 there were numerous complaints from people about the local newspaper placing advertisements for foreign companies.

Marietta College was in such deficit after Pearl Harbor that they had to get creative. They were able to save the university from financial ruin by persuading the US Army Air Corps to assign some preflight training sessions to the school. The Airmen were housed separately and taught subjects to aid in their flight duties, math, physics, geography, English, and physical training. Concerted efforts have been made to keep young local women off the airplanes, but these efforts have not always been successful.
