Spartan Rowing Cruises past Eastern Michigan
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Rowing in Michigan State completed a tour of eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon, winning all five races with an impressive display from college crews and first-year rowers in the novice races.
The Spartans ran their first, second and third varsity eight boats, as well as their novice eight and varsity 4 fleets in a series of 2,000 meter races with the Eagles. In events with more than one MSU boat race, the Spartan crews took both first and second places ahead of Eastern Michigan.
“We had a really great race day which gave some of our crews their first opportunities to compete this spring,” said Head Coach Kim Chavers commented. “I’m happy with the way the team has reacted after a good week of practice and we’ve been able to claim wins at each of our events. We’re excited to build on those results and look forward to racing Columbus next weekend.”
Four of the five races were won by a wide margin on open water, with MSU’s eight-man rookie crew beating eastern Michigan by more than a minute. The College 8 race ended in victory for MSU by 16 seconds as the crew crossed the finish line in 7:09.66.
The second Varsity 8 race came to an end with the Michigan State boat finishing just 0.04 seconds ahead of Eastern Michigan and posting a time of 7:29.56 to the EMU’s 7:29.60. Both varsity four MSU boats finished the race over 15 seconds ahead of the Eagles with times of 8:16.42 and 8:35.52. The third team of Uni Eight finished the race in 7:43.82, 49 seconds ahead of their opponents.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend to race with Ohio State, Indiana, Notre Dame and Oklahoma in the OSU Regatta in Columbus.
