Scott was one of two Columbia University students to receive the prestigious award and was one of 32 students from the United States selected from 826 candidates sponsored by 247 different colleges. This year’s class sets a record for the most women ever selected. The scholarship holders will begin their studies at the University of Oxford next October and will join other scholarship holders from more than 60 other countries.

Considered the most prestigious international scholarship for American college graduates, the award was created in 1903 by the Last Will and Legacy of Cecil John Rhodes, with the first class of scholars beginning their Oxford studies in 1904. Students from around the world compete for the 102 scholarships that are now awarded annually.

“We are very proud of Sydni’s achievement and wish her all the best for the incredible experience she has,” said Columbia’s Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Peter Pilling called.

At Columbia, Scott is majoring in Political Science and minor in African American and African Diaspora studies. According to Columbia College, Scott says she is “interested in investigating racial and restitution issues outside of the United States, where a different local and regional setting will enrich my engagement with and understanding of problem assessment and solution finding.”

Scott was a research intern with the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity, and her research on reconciliation and reparation related to this led her to found The Amendment Project (TAP), a grassroots organization of her own design dedicated to creating a discourse on racial compensation.

Scott is from Unionville, Connecticut and is the daughter of Kimberley Scott and the late ESPN sports caster Stuart Scott. She competes in the long jump and triple jump for the Lions. Her personal bests are 5.59 m in the indoor long jump and 5.49 m in the outdoor long jump, 11.79 m in the indoor triple jump and 11.38 m in the outdoor triple jump.
