T-Birds Rowing retains the Western Canadian Championship titles
VICTORIA — It was a successful day on the water for the UBC men’s and women’s varsity rowing teams as they defended their titles at the Western Canada Championship in Victoria, BC on Saturday afternoon.
The men won six of the nine championship points and the women seven of nine championship events.
UBC’s lightweight men competed against some podium-experienced UVic crews in the 4+, 2x and 1x. UBC won the 4+ and the 2x while UVic Olympian Patrick Keane took home the gold in the 1x.
Thunderbird Lightweight Women won all three light events with a dominant performance in the 4+ & 2x and a very narrow 0.6 second win in the 1x over the Vikes.
In the heavyweight action, the UBC men demonstrated some excellent 5-team depth qualifications in both the Open and JV 2 finals. UBC U23 World Championship finalist Joel Cullen & Julian Black to gold and Axel Ewasko & Brendan wall Silver in the men’s 2-. UVic’s Keane won the hard 1x against UBC newcomers Owen Bartel. UBC Eight won the final men’s race in a close battle by just 2 seconds over the Vikes.
The heavyweight women finished second in the 8+ but 2- ahead of the Vikes Sally Jones rowed to gold in the 1x.
Next up for the Thunderbird is the Head of the Charles in Boston on October 21, 22, 23 for the Varsity 8+ and Lightweight 4+s while the JVs row the Head of the Gorge in Victoria that same weekend.
