CEDAR CITY — The host Cedar High School girls’ and boys’ track and field teams both took first place at Saturday’s Cedar Invitational meeting.

The day-long event drew athletes from more than a dozen high schools in central and southern Utah, including all seven Region 10 schools.

Cedar’s boys team won their meet with flying colors, with the Reds scoring 106 team points while runner-up Pine View scored 80.5 points.

The girls’ clash was much closer as Cedar defeated Desert Hills by a single point, 106-105.

In the final individual competition, the 1600 meter, Desert Hills accumulated 13 points and pulled away from the Lady Reds 105-96. The Thunder’s Addison Pettingill won that race in a time of 5:31.7 while his second teammate Talia Skinner picked up another three points for sixth place. Cedar had not entered any athletes for the event.

However, in the final race of the day, the 4×400 relay, Cedar took first place and scored 10 points. Desert Hills was not included in the event, so the Reds won the overall meeting by a point. Cedar’s runners in the 4×400 relay were Kodi Oveson, McKenlee Mogensen, Cierra High and Mayce Dalton; they finished the race in 4:15.69.

Cedar coach Greg Harris said several athletes on his team qualified for the state during the meet, including Kiara Hansen in the discus and shot put, Ella Fielding in the javelin, Mayce Dalton in the high jump, Anna Hall in the 400-meter dash and Trent Durbin in the boys’ shot put.
