Three From Men’s Rowing Tabbed Academic All-Area; Ibrocic named Actor of the Year

PHILADELPHIADimitrije Ibrocic of the Drexel men’s rowing team was named Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area Performer of the Year and led three members of the Dragons to the regional honors on Wednesday. Also called Academic All-Area John Karen and Roman Smigiel.

To qualify for Academic All-Area, a student-athlete must be in his or her second year at the institution and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better. The team is selected by the sports information offices of 30 institutions in the greater Philadelphia area.

Ibrocic rowed sixth place in Drexel’s Varsity 8+ and helped the Dragons win gold and both the men’s and overall points titles at the 2022 Dad Vail Regatta. He also helped Drexel win the Kerr Cup, Murphy Cup and Bergen Cup. Ibrocic and Drexel ended the year at the IRA Nationals, where they tied for 16th place as the top program spot.

In the classroom, Ibrocic was a 2020-21 IRCA Scholar athlete and has a 3.94 GPA in finance.

Karen and Smigiel spent the season rowing in the second and front seats respectively in the Varsity 8+, aiding Drexel in his gold medal performances at the Dad Vail Regatta, Kerr Cup, Murphy Cup and Bergen Cup, and the IRA Nationals.

Karen has a 3.45 GPA in Real Estate Management and Development. Smigiel’s grade point average was 3.44 in economics.
