Tomek competes in the US women’s rowing team at the Olympics

DO THE WASHING UP – Former Flushing native Ellen Tomek will return to the Olympics this summer to represent Team USA and the US women’s rowing team.

Tomek, who competed in the 2008 and 2016 Olympics, will compete for medals in the 2020 Olympics as part of the U.S. women’s foursome. The 2020 Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan from July 23 to August 8.

At 37, Tomek is one of the older Olympians to compete in the 2020 women’s rowing competitions. She took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with partner Meghan O’Leary in the US women’s doubles team and made it to the finals, where she and O’Leary finished sixth.

Tomek also finished fifth in the US women’s double scull team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The double scull event consists of two teammates rowing at the same time with an oar in each hand, while in the case of quadruple rowing four teammates row.

In addition to her Olympic appearances, Tomek has won several medals in World Cup competitions, including a silver medal with O’Leary (double scull) at the 2017 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2018 World Championships (double scull).

Tomek has also won numerous national rowing qualifications. He was first in the double sculls at the US Seniors and Para World Championships in 2017, won the double sculls at the Olympic and Paralympic team competitions in 2016 and won the double sculls at the National Selection 2015 Regatta I. In total, she has had six double sculls and four individual sculls in national since 2008 Won qualification and rowing competitions.

Tomek missed the London 2012 Olympics due to a rib injury and failed to qualify for the double-four that year. She qualified for the doubles quad team for the 2020 Olympics and finished third in doubles sculls at the 2020 US Olympic Team Trials for Rowing.

Tomek graduated from Flint Powers Catholic High School in 2002 and earned her bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 2006. She is currently training in Redwood City, California.
