Viking XC: Second place in the men’s team; Women in third place at the Chile Pepper Festival


FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Augustana’s cross-country skiing programs showed their depth at the Chile Pepper Festival hosted by the University of Arkansas on Friday night. The Viking women finished third overall in the opening race, while the men finished second.

“I’m really looking forward to our groups”, Director Athletics and Cross Country Tracy Hellman called. “That was a big test for us and we are well positioned to continue pursuing our goals.

“We beat some really good teams and that was a great step for us as a program.”

The night began with the No. 4 nationally ranked women’s teams finishing third behind NCAA Division I No. 10 Arkansas (45) and Tulsa (135). The Vikings scored 185 points, consolidating their third place.

Two Vikings made it into the top 20 Nicolette Schmidt leading Augustana with a 19th place in 17: 27.3. Patty Jo English was previously at 17: 27.9 just in 20th place.

Augustana’s depth continued to show in the three to five places.

Senior Haylee waterfall was the third goalscorer for Augustana with 41st place (17: 47.7) as Mia Salas just behind 46th place (17: 51.2) and rounding off the top five was Megan means 59th place (18: 02.1).

The Vikings defeated the other four nationally ranked Division II opponents, with the top five spread for the Vikings being 35 seconds and an average of 17:43 as a team over the 5,000m.

Among the DII opponents ranked nationwide was the runner-up Colorado Mines, who came in sixth. Among the DI teams in the field behind Augustana were Nebraska (fourth), LSU (fifth) and Arkansas State (eighth).

In the men’s race, the Vikings finished second, defeating multiple Division I opponents, and ending up behind Division II Colorado School of Mines, ranked # 1, which scored 39 points. The Vikings secured second place, scoring 131 points to finish ahead of Western Colorado so Division II schools could claim the top three spots in the team race.

Ryan Hartman led the attack for the Vikings in 18th place in a breathtaking 24: 31.1. Henry Klitzke was just behind Hartman, who finished 21st in a time of 24: 37.9.

The third goalscorer for the Vikings was Colten brand in 24: 45.7 place 24 in the field. Kray person was the fourth Viking through the slide and ran 24: 58.3 to 33rd overall. The rating was rounded off by Augustana with Evan Johnson Place 35 in 25:06.

The Augustana men ran an average time of 24:48 and the five goalscorers were 36 seconds apart.

Among the Division I teams in the field, the Vikings defeated Arkansas (fourth), Central Arkansas (eighth), Nebraska (ninth) and Texas State (10th).


Augustana will be back in action at the Dordt Invitational on October 9th in Sioux Center, Iowa.
