Wetzel, Mitchell lead the state of Illinois at Redbird Invite

NORMAL, Fig .– On an extremely hot Friday night, sophomores Charlie Wetzel and Ailey Mitchell Notched top 15 placements led the Redbirds to a fifth place on the team for the men and a fourth place for the women at the Redbird Invite at the Weibring Golf Club.

Wetzel walked the Redbird men with an 11^NS Place in the men’s 8 km race with a personal best of 24: 48.40, a full 16 seconds better than his previous best time at the ISU.

A pair of traditional middle-distance runners next crossed the finish line for the ‘Birds, as Joseph Morrison and Riley Wells finished 23^approx and 38^NS, or second year Tyler Polak done 42^nd total in a time of 25: 42.20. Wells and Polak both ran personal bests.

student in the first year Charlie Kister was the last goalscorer to cross the finish line for the ISU, finishing 46^NS overall in his first 8k race. The men finished fifth overall with a total of 153 points.

In her first 6k race in an ISU uniform, Mitchell was the first female runner to cross the Birds’ finish line and finish 14 “^NS total in a time of 21: 39.80. The Redbird Invite was also Mitchell’s first race of the 2021 campaign.

UMKC transfer Claire Fuhlhage became the second runner for the ISU women and placed 28th^NS total in a time of 22: 06.70. Seniors Rachel Hickey and Caroline Meyers were the next to score for the ISU and in 33. Crossed the finish line just a few seconds apart^approx and 34^NS, respectively.

student in the first year Lauren Schulze scored a top 50 finish in her first 6k race and placed 44th^NS total in a time of 22:35.90. The ISU women finished fourth overall with 134 points ahead of the MVC enemies Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Drake and Valparaiso.

The Redbirds have a weekend off before heading to South Bend Indiana to attend the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. The promotion is scheduled to begin on Friday October 1st at 1:00 p.m. CT.
