BOSTON – Members of Boston University’s women’s ice hockey and lightweight rowing teams volunteered for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at the DCR Hatch Shell on Sunday, September 26th.

The terriers in attendance cheered the cancer survivors and their supporters along the 2 and 5 mile routes at the event.

“It was really special to come back to our community after we couldn’t attend outreach events last year,” said Senior Kathryn Grabowski of the lightweight rowing team. “It was very uplifting to cheer cancer survivors, their families and friends as they went to raise awareness of breast cancer, an extremely humbling and inspiring event to attend.”

The country’s oldest one-day breast cancer walk, Making Strides, celebrated its 29th edition as thousands walked down the Esplanade to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The event will raise awareness of the importance of breast cancer screening and ensure that all women and men can prevent, find, treat and survive breast cancer.

“As a team, we look forward to the event every year,” said the women’s ice hockey captain Kaleigh Donnelly. “We couldn’t take part last year, so it was really special that we could go out together on Sunday and cheer everyone.”

“It was a great feeling to recognize and support people who not only ran for the cause, but also for their friends and family who have directly or indirectly experienced the effects of breast cancer,” said Alexandra Deshaw of the lightweight rowing team . “It was so much fun to see the community in action!”
