Women’s Soccer Drops season finale in overtime


RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s football ended the 2021 season with a 2-1 loss to the Chicago State University Cougars on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The game was goalless until age 85NS Minute if Jayla Gage scored from the left to give the Cougars (2-14-1, 2-8-0 WAC) a 1-0 lead.

The vaqueros (6-12-2, 2-7-1 WAC) reacted less than two minutes later than junior Shentatious Knox sent a pass from the right up into the box. The ball seemed to be aimed at the all-time top scorer and the UTRGV point-getter junior Emily Zapatawho let the ball go by. Second year Cami Dade was right next to Zapata firing a screamer into the back of the net to tie the game to 1. It was Dade’s first career goal and points as a vaquero, having previously scored an assist for Kentucky in 2019.

In the 98NS Minute, however, Gage scored the game winner after a presentation by Julia Oliveira.

The Vaqueros outdid the Cougars with 15-7, including 8-3 on goal.

PhD student Mail Lunardi (4-11-1) saved once.

Alexa Seiler (2-12-1) made seven saves.

Before the game Anna Barkey, Knox, Lunardi, Victoria Mayo, McAllen alum Miranda Munoz, Pace alum Kryssie Rivera, Shi’Anne Swift, and Zapata were honored as part of the Seniors Day Celebration.
